Our Story
It all began one cold, dark snowy
day in Michigan....

ABOUT ANGRY PETES:

Angry Petes was founded in 2018 by award winning Chef Peter Harbison. Being a native Michigander and Detroit style pizza lover, Chef Pete was extremely disappointed in the quality of deep dish pizza served around San Diego, and the lack of any real Detroit style pizza in Southern California. This made him so angry he decided to name his business Angry Petes! (He's not angry at all when he has good pizza!)                 

 

Chef Pete decided that Detroit style pizza was simply too good to keep secret, so he decided to share this unique style with San Diego, because America's Finest City deserves America's Finest Pizza. 

Chef Pete’s culinary career started accidentally in 1994, thanks to getting his license suspended, he could no longer deliver pizza, so he grudgingly went to work in the kitchen of the pizzeria. What he thought would be a terrible job turned into a passion! His newfound love for cooking led him to Scottsdale Culinary Institute in Arizona, where he graduated in 2000. Chef Pete has over 24 years of culinary experience, including fine dining at Cuisine Restaurant in Detroit, MI, and the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, MI, as well as experience in pizza, Italian cuisine, sushi, pastries, hotels, country clubs, casinos and Irish pubs.  

THE CONCEPT:

If you haven’t had Detroit style pizza, then you don’t know what you’re missing. You’ve never tasted pizza like ours. After over 20 years of cooking, Chef Pete wanted to get back to the basics, creating a business based on one thing- amazing Detroit style pizza. Yes, we may have Faygo, Coney dogs & daily specials, but the concept of Angry Petes Pizza is simple- Detroit style pizza. We won’t have a twenty-page menu that takes hours to read, we won’t serve mediocre food. Everything we serve will be made from scratch in house, using nothing but the finest ingredients available. The corporate chain pizzerias use frozen, pre-made dough, sauces and cheese. Not us.

 

To keep things interesting for San Diego’s foodies, and the more adventurous eaters who may be tired of the basic pepperoni pizza, we will be offering wild game and unique meat pizzas, such as wild boar bacon, pork belly, duck leg confit, alligator sausage, rabbit leg confit, buffalo sausage and other various unique toppings. Where else can you get wild boar bacon pizza? For our veggie pizzas, we will be touring the local farmer markets for the freshest, most unique seasonal vegetables that you never dreamed would taste great on pizza!

We want to share our Motor City secret with you, all the people of San Diego, because being around the table with family and friends while eating great pizza is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Detroit pizza is now for everyone, not just Detroiters!

 

Making the world’s best pizza takes more than experience, it requires passion & dedication to making it perfect every time. At Angry Petes we only use fresh handmade dough, with the freshest local produce that southern California has to offer, made by experienced Chefs. We are proud to keep all the authenticity of Detroit style pizza as created in 1946, yet we are pleased to take revolutionary steps in pizza making, by using wild game and unique veggies, thinking outside the standard chain pizza box.

THE OTHER GUYS:

WARNING: If you are easily offended please skip this section! Sometimes the truth hurts. We are aware of the other types of pizza, some of them are good, some are OK if you’re really hungry, but none of them are ours, the real Detroit style pizza.

 

When a Michigander travels to Chicago, they quickly realize that “deep dish pizza” does not mean the same thing to everyone. Chicago- your so called “deep dish” is better termed a “marinara pot pie”. Sorry Chicago, you may have more jobs, more people and a slightly cleaner city, but Detroit style is the superior of the “Deep Dish Pizza”.                            

 

As for you New York, you have no deep dish pizza, therefore your thin crust pizza does not merit mention here. Forgetaboutit.

Dear Corporate American pizza conglomerates: you stay out of this! Don’t let the giant pizza conglomerates fool you or dictate what Detroit style pizza is. The imitation pizza mass produced by the giant corporations is NOT authentic, and in no way resembles what we grew up loving, the real Detroit style pizza. But it is cheap, thanks to using the cheapest ingredients possible.
